06:01 eeshangarg Hey ehashman! :)
06:02 ehashman hi eeshangarg !
06:03 shockingly I am awake
06:03 I took a late nap then drank a lot of tea... it's 1AM here!
06:04 eeshangarg ehashman: Oh, sorry, you probably need some sleep. Talk to you later. :)
06:04 ehashman eeshangarg: nah it's cool, I'm not planning to head home for a bit
06:04 on campus working currently
06:06 eeshangarg ehashman: That's so cool! Hopefully in a few months, I'll be in Canada(studying as a CS undergraduate) as well. Your advice regarding maths means a lot ma'am. :)
06:07 ehashman no problem! has it been helpful? enjoying your maths?
06:09 eeshangarg ehashman: Yep. Everything is going okay! :) Oh oh, once I am an undergraduate, after that I hope you'll be my GSOC mentor(for OpenHatch, of course!) very soon, that would be an honor. Can't wait! :-)
06:10 ehashman eeshangarg: haha, wow, I would definitely be interested :)
06:12 eeshangarg ehashman: Cool! Any plans for going to PyCon 2015 Montreal this year?
06:15 ehashman eeshangarg: I'd really like to but it's very likely that my exams will make it impossible
06:15 the conference and my exams overlap
06:16 if it happens to turn out all of my exams are in the first few days of the exam period, I might be able to make it, but I won't know that until mid-Feb
06:16 eeshangarg ehashman: Same here, still don't know if I can go or not. My teachers say that I will know about my exam dates in a couple of weeks. :)
06:18 ehashman: Anyways, I gotta go(maths homework!). An honor to talk to you, as always. See you soon! :-)
06:20 ehashman good luck, eeshangarg

07:30 WelcomeBot Welcome elzilrac!  The channel is pretty quiet right now, so I thought I'd say hello, and ping some people (like shauna, paulproteus, and marktraceur) that you're here.  If no one responds for a while, try emailing us at hello@openhatch.org or just try coming back later.  FYI, you're now on my list of known nicknames, so I won't bother you again.
07:31 phildini hello elzilrac!

18:48 skay hi all, someone who attends an in-person meetup is having trouble understanding the process of passing information back and forth between a python app and a javascript front end
18:49 I'm not the best at explaining this -- can someone point me to a tutorial I could share with the person?
18:50 paulproteus skay: FWIW aldeka's & my https://openhatch.org/wiki/Django_for_Designers covers this and I think it does so reasonably well.
18:52 skay paulproteus: thanks, I will take a look
18:52 paulproteus: he doesn't have a lot of background in writing webapps
18:52 frontend or backend
18:53 paulproteus: I will look at the django for designers and see maybe if I could make one for people who aren't as professient
18:53 paulproteus The feedback I've gotten is that this a good tutorial for people without much experience.
18:54 But yeah, if you find parts that are particularly bad for people without experience, that'd be useful info.

19:23 pdurbin skay: does it have to be a python app on the backend?
19:24 skay pdurbin: I'm going to say yes for now since this is what he's learned so far
19:24 pdurbin: I don't want to pile on more suggestions to him yet. he's going off in so many directions as it is
19:24 pdurbin ok. nevermind then
19:24 skay pdurbin: from what I understand, he wants to make a visual map of the chicago transit system to share accessibility information
19:31 pdurbin: what were you thinking?
19:31 pdurbin maybe there doesn't need to be a backend
19:31 skay I wonder if I get him to understand that. if he's going to be learning js to begin with
19:31 pdurbin maybe the backend is just data. just some csv files or whatever. static json
19:31 skay yeah

19:40 pdurbin skay: if static data for a backend is ok I highly recommend this book written for designers: Interactive Data Visualization for the Web - http://chimera.labs.oreilly.co[…]000345/index.html
19:41 paulproteus Hey, that seems cool.
19:41 skay pdurbin: neat, thanks! I will take a look for myself
19:43 pdurbin I heard the author talk about it at http://5by5.tv/webahead/70
19:44 ragnarock Hi pdurbin
19:44 * skay will be back after a walk
19:45 ragnarock I was trying heroku, can you tell me how does redis as a backend work
19:46 Kowiz joined #openhatch
19:46 pdurbin ragnarock: I've heard good things about redis but I've never used it.
19:47 ragnarock Well I am learning django ,and I thought to build a simple url shortner using redis, are there any lib for that in django
20:12 pdurbin searchbot: google django url shortner
20:12 searchbot pdurbin: DirectEmployers/django-my-urls · GitHub: <https://github.com/DirectEmployers/django-my-urls>; DESHRAJ/pyUrl · GitHub: <https://github.com/DESHRAJ/pyUrl>; Hottest 'url-shortener' Answers - Stack Overflow: <http://stackoverflow.com/tags/url-shortener/hot>; algorithm - How to code a URL shortener? - Stack Overflow: <http://stackoverflow.com/quest[…]e-a-url-shortener>; (1 more message)
20:13 pdurbin ragnarock: that first one looks like it might work but I've never heard of it
20:13 ragnarock: you might want to ask in #django
20:19 ragnarock thanks a lot searchbot rocks :D
